Where Soft Summer sits on the grid
The 12-season system places every sub-season on three perceptual axes. Soft Summer’s position:

Character of the Soft Summer palette
Soft Summer sits at the Summer–Autumn flow border, and it is the most low-key of the twelve seasons. The coloring is cool-leaning but visibly muted: skin that is more beige than rose or peach, hair in the mouse-brown to dusty medium-brown range that never flashes gold but does not read as ash either, eyes that are soft green-grey, hazel-cool or muted soft blue. Chroma is the defining axis — everything about the coloring whispers rather than states. The palette that frames this well is overcast afternoon in a historic library: dusty plum, mushroom, slate blue, sage-with-olive, cool camel that has been washed with grey. The mood is bookish, intellectual, still: the palette rewards slouchy wool, brushed cotton and natural linen, and punishes anything glossy or high-contrast. Soft Summer is frequently mis-typed, because its neutrality puts it near the boundary with three other seasons. The most common error is being drawn into True Summer's higher-saturation pinks, which on Soft Summer suddenly look childish. The second common error is being drawn into Soft Autumn's warm camels, which push the face into yellow territory. The test in both cases is whether the fabric has the specific washed-out quality that Soft Summer demands — if it looks clean and bright, it is probably too much.
Colors that flatter Soft Summer
Mushroom, mauve, dusty slate blue, soft muted plum, greyed sage, cool taupe, stone, soft pewter, dusty cool lilac, muted teal. The rule is cool bias + maximum muting: every color wants to look as if it has been left in the sun for a season, all the saturation bleached out. Soft Summer also handles an unusually wide range of greys well — stone, pewter, warm-greyed-down-to-neutral — because the coloring's inherent neutrality meets greys at the right midpoint. Metals: antiqued silver, pewter, brushed steel, matte platinum. Anything too polished looks too loud.
Colors to avoid for Soft Summer
Bright anything — clear red, kelly green, fuchsia — is jarring. Pure black gives the face an unflattering hardness. Warm earth tones (rust, pumpkin, mustard) pull the face into the wrong temperature. High-contrast combinations look oddly formal.
Telling Soft Summer from its neighbours
Mis-typing usually happens at the boundary with a neighbouring sub-season. These are the two adjacencies most likely to trip up a self-assessment.
